GREAT ISLAND, WELLFLEET

Description:  Hike to remains of Old Smith Tavern, Great Hill and Cape Cod Bay beach

Place to Meet:  Meet at Great Island parking lot, Wellfleet

Driving/Parking Directions:  Chequesset Neck Road to end, turning left into Great Island parking lot

No parking restrictions in summer. Parking lot can accommodate large number of vehicles


Start: (note: underlined words have links to pictures)

  • Leave Great Island parking lot on path next to national seashore sign, follow path to woodland steps. At bottom of steps at marsh turn RIGHT—3 minutes
  • Follow marsh trail along the Gut (Tombolo), turning LEFT at first NPS sign-17 minutes
  • Continue along edge of marsh, turning RIGHT onto small wooded path to Great Island Tavern photo sign. The path is parallel to edge of marsh. Be sure to go right to end up at photo sign
  • Go RIGHT at sign towards Great Island Tavern site, When you reach the tavern site sign,  take a path to the LEFT to view Wellfleet Harbor. Harbor is visible from this sign
  • Follow path to RIGHT of tavern site Along the way you will come to a triangle of paths, take the right fork, turning LEFT at north/south road at Great Hill Beach sign-14 minutes
  • Visit Pricilla Aldan Bartlett Henderson monument, the last private owners of the island-5Minutes
  • Back to road that you have been walking and turn  LEFT, heading south to Middle Meadow Marsh which you come to at bottom of a hill
  • At marsh, go RIGHT heading west towards bay beach. At end of this marsh, climb a steep dune and down other side to reach the beach

Walk north on bay beach turning RIGHT  path at break in the dunes- 21 minutes

Go over this cut in the dunes and reach the marsh on other side.. In near distance, you will see the large frame beach house

  • Stay LEFT on sand to path on top of old road to existing road
  • RIGHT turn into woods across from wooden gate to parking lot
