RYDER BEACH, TRURO to NEWCOMB HOLLOW BEACH, WELLFLEET

Description:  Hike Ryder beach to Newcomb Hollow beach along beaches, fire roads, and wooded trails. 5.7 miles.

Place to Meet: This is a one-way hike so a car is needed in both the Ryder beach parking and the Newcomb Hollw beach parking lot. Carpools between start and end are needed.

Driving Directions to Ryder Beach:  Exit route 6 at Prince Valley Road Truro. Right at Old County Rd & left at Ryder Beach Road to end.

Driving Directions to Newcomb Hollow Beach: Exit route 6 at Gross Hill Road Wellfleet & go to end.

Parking Issues - Resident permit may be required during the summer months.


Start: (note: underlined words have links to pictures)

  • Park in the Ryder Beach parking lot.

  • Start hike by turning RIGHT onto sand path to the bay beach from SOUTH end of parking lot.

  • Turn LEFT at the beach and walk about about 100 yards. Turn LEFT up the dune.    Then walk to sand road and turn RIGHT .

  • Walk on sand road keeping RIGHT at first fork.     At the second fork bear LEFT.

  • Turn RIGHT onto a sand path going up a grade.    At split rail fench bear RIGHT.

  • Follow trail to intersection of the old railroad bed and turn RIGHT.    Follow rail bed until you reach the next LEFT .

  • Follow this path until it reaches Old County Road. Go RIGHT at the road.

  • Walk on Old County Road for about 100 yards and then take a sharp LEFT on fire road.

  • Go up grade and take a RIGHT at the top and continue up path.

  • Continue on this fire road making no turns.     George Nilson Road is at the end. Turn RIGHT and continue to Route 6.

  • Cross route 6 and proceed up Rose Road.    At Slough Pond Road turn LEFT.

  • Continue under power lines and turn RIGHT at the first intersection.

  • Cross Black Pond Road (dirt) and take the first LEFT to the former house of Phillip Hamburger .

  • Continue on path at end of driveway into woods. Herring River is on your LEFT.    Continue until you can see Herring Pond then cross small wooden bridge walking to Black Pond Road (again).     Turn RIGHT here .

  • Walk along Black Pond Road and continue past, and past intersections until you see a green road sign near a split rail fence.     Bear RIGHT here .

  • Walk along this path to go to the beach and the Atlantic Ocean, going down a small dune .

  • turn RIGHT and walk to Newcomb Hollow beach and parking lot.
